Two professors discussed their upcoming book project on the future of anti-corruption initiatives in Latin America Tuesday at an online event with Harvard’s David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies.

Ezequiel A. González-Ocantos, a professor at the University of Oxford, and Paula Muñoz, a professor at the Universidad del Pacífico in Peru, spoke about their upcoming book, which examines the effects of anti-corruption efforts — with a particular focus on the “Lava Jato” investigation in Brazil — on voter activity and political engagement. The event, titled “The Criminalization of Corruption in Latin America: Causes and Consequences of Lava Jato,” marks the latest installment in the center’s “Tuesday Seminar Series.”

González-Ocantos opened the virtual discussion by describing the historical context and academic objectives of their research for the book.

“Our interest in Lava Jato stems perhaps from a broader question: What is the best way to fight corruption?” González-Ocantos said.

Trump to participate in town hall event on NBC Thursday instead of debate

Adella Miesner

NBC News announced Wednesday that President Donald Trump would participate in a town hall-style event on Thursday — the day that he and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden were scheduled to have a debate prior to Trump’s COVID-19 diagnosis.

NBC says the event, hosted by Today show anchor Savannah Guthrie, will take place in Miami with “a group of Florida voters.”

The network also said that it had received a statement from Dr. Clifford Lane, the Clinical Director at the National Institutes of Health, who said that both he and Dr. Anthony Fauci had cleared Trump to participate.

The records reportedly reviewed by Lane and Fauci included a PCR COVID-19 test. Lane said that he has a “high degree of confidence” that the president is “not shedding infectious virus.”

The one-hour event will begin at 8 p.m. ET Thursday.

Trump’s town hall will come the same day that Joe Biden

Key Malaysia Party Threatens to Leave Ruling Bloc, Pressuring PM

Adella Miesner

(Bloomberg) — The largest party in Malaysia’s ruling coalition threatened to pull out unless it gets better terms, adding pressure on Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to shore up his unstable government or call a snap election.

The United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), which holds about a third of the seats in Muhyiddin’s 12-party government, said in a statement late Tuesday that it would enter talks with him to stay in the bloc. It also suggested formalizing an alliance with the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, which would unify the largest Malay-Muslim political organizations.

Short-Term Rental Sites Combat Party Houses, Complaints as COVID Shuts Nightclubs

Adella Miesner

When the coronavirus pandemic shut down bars and concert halls in March, a new phenomenon was born: the vacation-rental nightclub.

Professional party promoters started scanning Airbnb, Vrbo and other short-term rental sites for mansions and luxury condos for hire. Tickets were going for $90 on Eventbrite and TikTok for soirees with bottle service and DJs.

“People were looking to escape from their own homes and came into our tiny neighborhood to party all day, every day,” says Kristen Robinson Doe, a resident of a quiet suburban Dallas neighborhood where a party pad was being rented out for more than $1,000 a night. The five-bedroom home, with a resort-style pool, hot tub, outdoor kitchen and mini-golf putting green, was booked back-to-back through the summer. Doe watched in disbelief as strangers streamed through the gates every weekend and danced until dawn, unmasked, inebriated — and in clear violation of social distancing protocols.
