Celebrity Chef Kenny Gilbert plans to open a new restaurant in Jacksonville’s historic Springfield neighborhood.
Gilbert made the announcement on social media on Sunday — but wasn’t ready to offer many details.
“I’m not necessarily ready to divulge the name or the concept yet. I’m waiting for our logo to be completed and it’s almost done,” Gilbert said in a voicemail message to the Times-Union on Monday. He noted more details would be forthcoming.
Gilbert — a contestant on Bravo’s “Top Chef” Season 7 in 2010 — shared the news with his Instagram and Facebook followers on Sunday.
He wrote, “I am pleased to announce that Me and Anna [Gilbert] will be opening a fast-casual concept at the previously located Bleu Chocolate [sic] and Three Layers Space.”
In the post, he wrote that he’s started the process of getting things changed over and hopes to open prior to the holidays.
“We will announce the name and concept soon. We are excited to bring a cool, fresh, and safe restaurant concept to our neighborhood of Springfield,” he said.
Gilbert’s new venture is planned for 1602 Walnut St., the former home to Bleu Chocolat Cafe — which closed in January — and before it, Three Layers Cafe.
Gilbert previously operated two other Northeast Florida restaurants — Gilbert’s Underground Kitchen and Gilbert’s Social.
Gilbert’s Underground Kitchen, at 510 South 8th St. in Fernandina Beach, closed on Dec. 1, 2019, after about five years in business.
Gilbert’s Social, at 4021 Southside Blvd., closed nearly a year ago, after being open for about three years.
At about the same time, Gilbert began work on a new restaurant project — Cut & Gather in Raleigh, N.C. — described as a wood-fired concept, reported The News & Observer newspaper. The restaurant’s website lists its status as coming soon.
Also last year, Gilbert announced he was cutting ties with four Jacksonville Beach restaurant concepts: Gilbert’s Hot Chicken, Gilbert’s Beach BBQ, Gilbert’s Southern and Seachasers Lounge. The latter two remain open under new ownership under the rebranded Southern Kitchen & Bar and Seachasers Lounge names.
