HEBRON — Brain Freezers Frozen Dessert Cafe will shut its doors for the winter season for the first time since it opened in 2013.

Brain Freezers owner John Johnson Jr. announced that the business will close Sunday, Oct. 11, for the winter, which means its annual holiday light display is canceled.

In a Facebook post, Johnson blamed restrictions on businesses intended to limit the spread of COVID-19.

“Due to the continuing restrictions imposed by our governor, we are still unable to open the inside of our restaurant because of the self-service ban and distancing requirements in a small space,” Johnson wrote.

“Since our valued customers continue to miss our self-serve model where you can get exactly what you want, the way you want, and the resulting decline in sales, and decline in temperature outdoors, we have made the difficult decision to close for the winter for the first time since we opened in 2013.”

With the business closed, the holiday light show can’t go on, he said.

“Not having a staff on site to be able to monitor the show nightly is just a deal breaker for us,” John wrote.

In an interview with the Journal Inquirer last December, Johnson said the “over-the-top” holiday decor helps with business in the winter months, which can be difficult when you’re selling ice-cold treats.

Johnson started the elaborate light displays in 2013 and had said he added to it every year.

Usually, he’d start planning for it in the coming weeks. He told the JI he begins preparing in October, by listening and selecting music choices.

Then in November, Johnson spends every weekend until Thanksgiving with a crew of family and friends assembling the lights. This year Johnson is skipping the holiday season and hopes to be back to business as usual in the spring.

“We will keep our fingers crossed that hopefully restrictions will be lifted by April that we will be able to fully reopen and welcome you back in,” he wrote.

Brain Freezers is located at 65 Main St. in the center of town.
