Two professors discussed their upcoming book project on the future of anti-corruption initiatives in Latin America Tuesday at an online event with Harvard’s David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies.

Ezequiel A. González-Ocantos, a professor at the University of Oxford, and Paula Muñoz, a professor at the Universidad del Pacífico in Peru, spoke about their upcoming book, which examines the effects of anti-corruption efforts — with a particular focus on the “Lava Jato” investigation in Brazil — on voter activity and political engagement. The event, titled “The Criminalization of Corruption in Latin America: Causes and Consequences of Lava Jato,” marks the latest installment in the center’s “Tuesday Seminar Series.”

González-Ocantos opened the virtual discussion by describing the historical context and academic objectives of their research for the book.

“Our interest in Lava Jato stems perhaps from a broader question: What is the best way to fight corruption?” González-Ocantos said.

Trump to participate in town hall event on NBC Thursday instead of debate

Adella Miesner

NBC News announced Wednesday that President Donald Trump would participate in a town hall-style event on Thursday — the day that he and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden were scheduled to have a debate prior to Trump’s COVID-19 diagnosis.

NBC says the event, hosted by Today show anchor Savannah Guthrie, will take place in Miami with “a group of Florida voters.”

The network also said that it had received a statement from Dr. Clifford Lane, the Clinical Director at the National Institutes of Health, who said that both he and Dr. Anthony Fauci had cleared Trump to participate.

The records reportedly reviewed by Lane and Fauci included a PCR COVID-19 test. Lane said that he has a “high degree of confidence” that the president is “not shedding infectious virus.”

The one-hour event will begin at 8 p.m. ET Thursday.

Trump’s town hall will come the same day that Joe Biden

A total of 37 people — 28 students and nine adults — tested positive for COVID-19, and 270 people were instructed to self-quarantine.

“In Suffolk County, we have not seen an event like this before at any time throughout this pandemic. For Suffolk County, this was a superspreader event. This is the first time that the health department has taken enforcement action against a business,” Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said.

The venue, the Miller Place Inn, has been slapped with a $10,000 fine for violating COVID restrictions.

Beyond Wonderland Southern California has been moved to two days in June 2021 at NOS Event Center—and an additional racetrack area as previously planned. Insomniac CEO Pasquale Rotella announced the festival’s new dates and details in upbeat social media posts on Monday. He billed it as “New Stages, New Dates, and a whole lotta New Experience!”

The down the rabbit hole-themed festival traditionally takes place in March, which is when the coronavirus outbreak began. At the time, Rotella postponed the San Bernardino-based festival to June 19 and 20, 2020. But as the pandemic continued, Insomniac was forced to cancel it, as well as the company’s flagship festival Electric Daisy Carnival Las Vegas. Now Beyond Wonderland is opening a new chapter. It is not taking place in March this year, but rather on June 25 and 26—the old EDC dates.

“I loved them for the energy of that out-of-school,
