The missing item on the UK government’s new menu of Covid rules is trust | Opinion

Adella Miesner

The new three-tier system to classify Covid risk puts me in mind of a rubber sandwich. It isn’t the most obvious association, so I’ll explain.

In 1896, New York was gripped by moral panic over uncontrolled boozing in the city’s infamous saloons. The state legislature passed Raines law (written by a senator of that name) restricting alcohol sales. One measure among many was to limit Sunday licences to establishments that offered food.

The saloons responded by keeping a token sandwich behind the bar, which each punter would buy as a proxy for the drink that could then legally be served alongside it. Police looked the other way. In one reported incident officers did intervene, but on the side of a bar owner who was trying to stop a hungry customer eating the token communal sandwich. Over time, that stale crust of real bread was replaced with a more durable model,

Diversity results in a divine menu at Osten Beerhall

Adella Miesner

Osten is part of a trio of eateries run by partners Richard Forbes, Mark Dufort (executive chef) and Dan Hawkins who chatted with me after my dining experience.

They launched Shorty’s Pizza in August 2018 and, by November 2019, the spaces next door were renovated for 1101 CaféBar and Osten Beerhall.

Osten’s exterior is a hard-to-miss indigo blue. Inside, the space is rustic, post-industrial, filled with light and pleasant breezes when the patio garage door is open. Neighbours visiting during the reno chatted about the building’s history — once a woodworking space and once a production facility for Bozzo’s Meats Cash and Carry.

During the pandemic, Shorty’s continued to operate with the other venues temporarily closed. Osten is now open for takeout, patio and dining in with reduced-capacity seating, using 1101 CaféBar space for “spillover.”

A menu of dishes for October dinners

Adella Miesner

We thought it would be fun this month to revisit some of our favorite recipes from the cooking classes Tracey used to teach at The Panhandler, which some of you may remember at Citiplace. The classes were a fun, hands-on experience filled with useful kitchen tips and original recipes that are quite easy to make—and still just as delicious. It has been many years since Tracey taught these classes, so we decided it was time to resurrect some of these fall-inspired recipes and tips and share them with our Dining In readers.

ON THE MENU

• Mixed Fall Greens and Apples with Pomegranate Vinaigrette
• Chicken Grillades
• Pumpkin Apple Strudel

Misfit switches up its ‘coffee bar’ game with a liquor license, full cocktail menu

Adella Miesner

“Five years ago, we wanted to have a liquor license…” he tells City Pages.

But first, Misfit got hit by COVID like, well, the whole world.

And to survive that first wave of 2020’s WTF-ness, the company hustled like hell. They began offering new services for customers like local bike delivery. That resulted in their manager-roaster (who loves riding) logging 1,500 miles in a month, and only once having to bike to the airport for a delivery when the zipcode-based ordering system glitched. The shop also debuted a coffee subscription service, and began selling crowler-sized cans of cold brew to-go from the shop’s new walk-up service window – all of which remain available today.

Then Minneapolis took to the streets in response to George Floyd’s killing. During that time, Misfit dropped everything it was doing and boarded up in legendary fashion. The shop provided free coffee to the Whittier neighborhood,

Impressive Cleaver won’t leave diners split with its meat-centric menu – Food and Dining – Columbus Alive

Adella Miesner

The new eatery benefits from its ties to sibling business the Butcher and Grocer, which rests in the same Grandview strip mall

The owners of an impressive new restaurant in Grandview have named their eatery Cleaver for sound reasons: It’s a meat-centric establishment tied to the Butcher & Grocer, a sibling business located in the same little strip mall.

An esteemed food shop committed to artisanship and local sourcing, the Butcher & Grocer supplies Cleaver with top-quality products that set the tone for the restaurant’s cuisine. But great ingredients are only half the battle, which is why Cleaver enlisted a skillful kitchen warrior to win the other half: Jay Kleven, former executive chef at Rockmill Tavern.

Like other high-profile new restaurants coping with opening during a global pandemic, Cleaver’s small regular menu — which is served at its patio and bar and is takeout-friendly — is frequently updated and augmented

Nando’s new menu includes sweet potato wedges, garlic perinaise and a plant-based fake chicken wrap

Adella Miesner

NANDO’S has launched a new plant-based menu which includes sweet potato wedges, garlic perinaise and a fake chicken option for wraps, burgers and pittas.

The chain’s first ever meat alternative has been dubbed the Great Imitator as it’s been designed to smell, taste and look just like Nando’s famous Peri-Peri chicken breast fillet.

The Great Imitator is made from Pea Protein.

The new product, which is made entirely from pea protein, will be available in nationwide restaurants and for delivery from Tuesday.

It will be served as four strips in burgers, pittas and wraps and served with Nando’s vegan Perinaise.

Meanwhile, Nando’s fans will still be able to choose their level of heat on the Peri-ometer if they order the plant-based option.

It comes as part of the chain’s plans to “cater to changing dietary habits” as well as a drive for more sustainable product options.

Nando’s Has Finally Added A Meat-Free ‘Chicken’ To Its Menu

Adella Miesner

From Delish

Nando’s has just announced that, for the first time ever, it will be offering a meat-free ‘chicken’ option on the menu.

The plant-based alternative is aptly named The Great Imitator and has been crafted to taste just like Nando’s signature PERi-PERi chicken breast fillet but is made entirely from pea protein.

The Great Imitator can be ordered as strips, or added to burgers, pittas and wraps, just like Nando’s chicken. And of course, customers will be able to decide what level of spice is added to the plant-based meat alternative.

But Nando’s wants you to know that The Great imitator is cooked on the same grills as its PERi-PERi chicken, making it not suitable for vegans.

You can treat yourself to a meat-free ‘chicken’ dinner from Nando’s as off 13 October.
