Types of Softwood for Framing, Decking and Fencing From Companies Like RMFP (Rocky Mountain Forest Products)

With the price of lumber higher than normal in 2019 for various reasons, homeowners wanting to make improvements to their property search for affordable pricing. They appreciate shopping opportunities provided by companies like RMFP (Rocky Mountain Forest Products) so they can build a new deck or replace old fencing with something beautiful and functional. Most customers choose new wood from different tree species, while others like the idea of reclaimed wood from old barns and other buildings.

Pine and Spruce

Softwoods like pine and spruce are in great demand in the lumber industry, as they grow quickly in managed forests and are suitable for framing homes and certain other buildings. Not everyone wants a pine or spruce fence or deck, however, because the wood generally doesn’t last as long as many other species when constantly exposed to weather elements.

Residential property owners may want to buy these types of lumber if they plan to build an outbuilding like a garden shed or a detached garage. They can use that for the framing. It can be used for siding as well, but the property owners must maintain it diligently or it will deteriorate over time.

Cedar for Exterior Uses

Cedar, also a softwood, is more commonly chosen for siding if the homeowners prefer wood instead of vinyl or aluminum. As with siding, decks and fences often are constructed of cedar as well because that wood is so resistant to weather, insects and rodents. It also provides a lovely natural look that vinyl can only imitate. Many men and women are unfamiliar with cedar in anything but shrub and bush form, but the trees grow to 35 ft. tall relatively quickly if not trimmed back.

Softwood for Building

The description of pine and spruce as softwood does not indicate that it cannot hold up for building framing. Instead, the concept of softwood and hardwood primarily indicates differences in how quickly the trees grow. Nevertheless, those species do tend to be easier for builders to work with in regard to ease of nailing and insertion of screws. They can complete high-quality labor more quickly than would otherwise be the case.
